Two items caught our eye. The first is this mind-boggling graphic that shows the percentage of obese Americans in the period 1999-2002, broken down by sex and ethnicity. Everyone’s obese, but women seem to be substantially more obese fatty diet than men, and black women in particular are about to bust out the right side of the chart. After a moment’s reflection fatty diet we realized that the artist had taken the annoying liberty of fatty diet starting the graph’s x-axis origin at about 23% rather than 0%. But still, the chart seems to say that 49% of black women are obese (not overweight, but BMI 30 or over), and 38% percent of Hispanic women are obese. With all the hand waving this week over fattest state Mississippi’s 29.5% obesity rate, 49% just seemed completely off the scale. But a search revealed the CDC report linked to above which confirms the figures. The only conclusion that can be drawn from the chart is that obesity is disproportionately affecting women and minorities.
