The so-called “healthy food” diet, characterized by “better-for-you” low-calorie, low-fat, reasonably-portioned menu items, had swept the country and been incoporated into the menus of dozens and dozens of major restaurant and fast food chains. But persistent low sales have triggered a reevaluation among restaurant executives. Ruby Tuesday has eliminated several items, including its Blueberry D’Lite yogurt parfait. And Burger King is trying to salvage its heretofore healthy menu items by introducing deep frying into their preparation: the reformulated chicken salad includes deep-fried chicken strips — topped with globs of ranch dressing, for good measure. |
