Arkansas, the 11th fattest state turns out out to have slimmer kids than California, the 31st fattest. And while California kids are getting fatter and fatter (up 6% in three years to 28% overweight), Arkansas kids are holding steady (21% this year and last). Arkansas’ embarassingly high ranking in recent obesity statistics may ironically be responsible for the good news: Shocked into action, Arkansas implemented initiatives to combat childhood obesity trends earlier than most states, including universal BMI tracking for students (California only does sampling for three grade levels). |
